After having been displayed in 1870 in the Italian Exhibition of Fine Arts in Parma, in 1872 the painting was displayed in Milan, at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where the committee, including Francesco Hayez and Gerolamo Induno, decided to buy it for the Brera Picture-Gallery.
It is a big painting, representing one of the most popular episodes of the bloody battle of Custoza, on the 24th of June, 1866 (third Independence war) when the twenty-one year old Amedeo di Savoia got injured during an assault on the rise of Monte Croce. However, Fattori chose the moment of pause after the ambulance arrived, on the quiet plain, surrounded by a striped ski, and corpses in the stubble. In this choral yet not rhetorical scene, the prince, though in the centre of the painting being held by his battlefield assistant, ends up disappearing amongst anonymous soldiers and horses.

Giovanni Fattori (Livorno1825 - Florence 1908)

Fattori, a great realist painter, a reference point for the macchiaiolo movement, has narrated the epic deeds of the Risorgimento in a non-conventional and anti-rhetorical way, preferring secondary episodes, painting backlines, wagons for wounded people and provisions.
He shows the confusion and tiredness moments of the battles, the fatigue and fear, the routine of military life with a synthetic and powerful painting. Settings are usually limited and essential, shapes are defined but sober, thanks to a soft but clear chiaroscuro.
